1780s Round Gown, Part II

We got some snow over the weekend, and of course I had to take some photos of the round gown against the cold, crisp backdrop! I only managed to make it as far as the backyard, but I'm still fairly happy with the results.

Blog Update for 2026

   When I originally started this blog in early 2023, it was a place for me to journal my trial-and-error entry into 18th century clothing. In large part, it has been for me--a way to document what I did for future reference and to have a place to look back and see how far I've come.  As time has gone on, I have found myself pursuing more complex projects outside of the realm of the 18th century. Instagram is my primary place to post what I sew, but it is a fickle forum, and I found that anything really meaningful I shared there was both not getting seen and once seen, not interacted with by my followers. Instagram as social media has brought me into connection with lots of fantastic people and provided so much inspiration. However, I am starting to feel as though the algorithm wants to keep its users in a box. The further I get into my 30s, the more I desire to stretch myself and try new things. 1790s Round Gown

The transitional era of the 1790s is one of my favorite historical fashion eras. They were trying all kinds of things, and silhouettes could be a little unexpected. I've tried to make a gown from this era before, but ran into some issues and ended up repurposing the fabric for something else altogether due to unsuitability. I'll be revisiting that 1795 round gown in the future, hopefully this next summer.  Jane Austen's 250th birthday (a few weeks ago as of the time of starting this post) put me in a Regency kind of mood. I had a lot of thoughts, including some later Regency looks, more like what we tend to see in film adaptations of Austen's works, but after doing some deep dives for inspiration, I found that the printed cotton and linen gowns of the later 1790s and early 1800s were really speaking to me. A Ditto Suit: Frock Coat

I decided fairly quickly that in making my suit, I preferred the look of the coats with stand-and-fall collars. As historically there were a few neckline options, from no collar whatsoever on up, I went with my aesthetic preference for the frock coat style. I was pretty intimidated by this as I looked through the resources I have. I have made a 1940s women's suit using tailoring techniques, but that is the limit of my suiting experience. To take that limited knowledge and use it to draft, fit, and assemble an 18th century suit coat from a gridded image felt overwhelming, even with the 18th century sewing experience I had under my belt already.  Doing some research in a couple of excellent historical costuming groups on Facebook, I found one name popped up again and again as the frock coat expert: Henry Cooke.
